Fine art gallery – UK

BRIEF
A fine art gallery based in Shoreditch, London, Signal Gallery asked Type Design to create a new brand to place them firmly within their location. The area had fast become known across Europe and beyond as the place to find London’s brightest young talent spilling out of software start-ups into organic vegan cafes and underground club nights.
Signal wanted to avoid the clinical applications favoured by West End galleries and instead reflect Shoreditch’s collaborative, cutting edge reputation and the mix of fine art, realist and street art styles they exhibit.
Signal Gallery also asked Type Design to create signage, digital and print catalogues, flyers, magazine advertising, business cards and letterhead.
INTERPRETATION
To ensure the art would always lead, we knew black and white should drive the colour palette. We suggested a chunky, slab serif typeface, used staggered and sometimes reversed-out. With red splashes adding immediacy, the scheme suggests protest movements and handmade zines of the punk era – a perfect fit with the Shoreditch setting.
In the logo type, an ‘i’ dotted with a star and a horizontal line represent gallery lighting, identifying Signal as shining a light on talent.
